One of Fukuoka's biggest parks is opening up its nights for the first time.
Uminonakamichi Seaside Park — the vast national park on a sandbar in Hakata Bay — launches its first-ever night event, "Hikari to Kaze no Seaside Night" (Light & Wind Seaside Night). On weekends and holidays only from August 15 through September 27, 2026, the park's Hikari to Kaze Plaza stays open until 9 PM (last entry 8 PM).
A park that's all families and picnic sheets by day turns into an illuminated seaside chill spot by night.
Rainbow Palm Trees Against the Hakata Bay Skyline
The light-up runs 18:00–21:00. A row of palm trees along the water glows green, orange, purple, blue, and red — each tree its own color, reflecting off the water — with the Fukuoka city skyline glittering across Hakata Bay behind them. Glowing dome tents dot the plaza. You can't walk ten steps without taking a photo.
Chill Out by Lantern Light
A chill-out area appears on the lawn: deck chairs and old-school lanterns facing the rainbow palms and the night view. Sinking into a chair with the sea breeze on your face — on a midsummer night, that alone is a feast.
Sparklers Allowed — and Free Lantern Rentals
Here's the good part: a dedicated sparkler corner. With more and more parks and beaches in Japan banning fireworks, having a sanctioned place to light senko-hanabi is a small luxury.
There are also free paper-lantern rentals. The glowing blue lanterns carry illustrations of the park and even project a little fish silhouette at your feet. An evening lantern stroll through a seaside park — that's core summer memory material.
Even Dogs Get a Night Out
A night dog run opens too — a fenced lawn rimmed with lights where dogs can sprint around after dark. Rare, and honestly considerate: daytime heat is brutal for dogs as well.
