New Era × Bonsai!? The TRADMAN'S BONSAI Collab Is Quietly the Coolest Drop of the Summer

The undisputed king of caps has found its next collab partner — and it's bonsai.
If your first reaction is "wait, what?", congratulations, that's the correct reaction. But the more you dig into this one, the more it makes perfect sense.

The partner in question is TRADMAN'S BONSAI, a Tokyo-based collective of bonsai artists on a mission to take Japan's miniature-tree culture worldwide. Their first-ever collection with New Era drops Monday, August 10, 2026 at New Era Shinjuku South, Shinsaibashi, and the official online store.

So, Who Are TRADMAN'S BONSAI?

Teppei Kojima of TRADMAN'S BONSAI

If "bonsai × street culture" doesn't compute yet, here's the story: TRADMAN'S BONSAI was formed in 2015 by Teppei Kojima, a man who spent his youth deep in music, fashion and tattoo culture, then discovered the quiet beauty of Japanese tradition while working as an apparel buyer — and dove headfirst into the world of bonsai.

Guided by the belief that "tradition is a series of innovations," the collective has since collaborated with shu uemura, NIKE, Dior and RIMOWA, redefining bonsai from "that thing in your grandparents' tatami room" into a global symbol of Japanese cool.

In other words: New Era and these guys were always going to get along.

The Concept: Legendary Five-Needle Pine "501"

At the heart of the collection is the silhouette of "501", the five-needle pine that appears in the TRADMAN'S BONSAI logo. In the bonsai world they say "bonsai begins with the five-needle pine and ends with the five-needle pine" — and this particular tree is Kojima's most treasured pot.

The lineup is built around the brand's signature black, mostly monotone. And on New Era's iconic [9FIFTY] and [59FIFTY], there's a twist: a bonsai-green under visor. Hiding the green of pine needles where only the wearer can see it — that's about as understated-cool as it gets.

Matsubaya 10th anniversary side patch

The side features a special patch marking the 10th anniversary of Matsubaya, the company behind TRADMAN'S BONSAI, with the "501" silhouette worked into the design.

RAW JAPAN's Takeaway

"A bonsai cap" sounds like a novelty item — but in person, this collection is minimal, black-on-black, and honestly just clean. The green under visor, the pine silhouette on the 10th-anniversary patch: the details only reveal themselves to people who look closely. Very bonsai of them.

TRADMAN'S BONSAI's motto — "tradition is a series of innovations" — is exactly the kind of Japanese cool RAW JAPAN lives for. If you've never given bonsai a second thought, consider this cap your gateway drug. The green gets you.
