"The Future I Saw" — Why a 20-Year-Old Occult Manga Is Being Called a Prophetic Book, and What Might Happen in July 2025

"I've seen this cover somewhere before…"
"Wait—wasn’t this published in 1999?"
These kinds of posts flooded social media on March 11, 2011—the day of the Great East Japan Earthquake.
That’s when one mysterious manga started gaining explosive attention.
It was "The Future I Saw", a book by manga artist Ryo Tatsuki.
And printed on its cover were the chilling words:
"March 2011 - A Major Disaster"

First published in 1999, The Future I Saw is an essay-style manga based on the actual dreams of author Ryo Tatsuki—dreams that later turned into real events.
Earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, viruses…
They sound like just dreams, but they leave a strange, lingering feeling.
Over 10 years after its release, in 2011, that eerie phrase on the cover—"March 2011: A Major Disaster"—suddenly matched reality.
And just like that, the manga became known as a "prophetic book" on forums and social media.
People were stunned: "Could this manga have predicted it?"
It was quickly elevated to cult status among believers and skeptics alike.
Dreams That Were Too Specific to Dismiss
The manga doesn't just talk about disasters—it also contains fragments of the future that somehow lined up with real events.
Freddie Mercury
Tatsuki reportedly dreamed in 1976 and 1986 of Mercury dying from an unknown illness,
and even his life being turned into a movie.
Freddie passed away in 1991, and Bohemian Rhapsody premiered in 2018—right on cue.
Princess Diana
In a dream dated August 31, 1992, the word “DIANNA” appeared, along with a woman holding a baby.
This has been interpreted as foreshadowing Princess Diana’s fatal car crash on August 31, 1997.
There was no direct depiction of death—just symbolic imagery.
The Coronavirus Pandemic
In the 2021 Complete Edition, a dream recorded in 1995 mentions the outbreak of a mysterious virus around the year 2020.
Naturally, this drew major attention after COVID-19 emerged.
With so many of these dreams seemingly "matching" future events, readers were left asking:
"Is this all just coincidence?"
The Author Says, "This Is Not Prophecy."
Ryo Tatsuki has repeatedly stated that she’s not a prophet, and the manga is just a record of dreams.
There’s no spiritual agenda or scientific backing—just personal experience.
And yet, because the dreams aligned with real events, it’s the readers who started giving them deeper meaning.
That blurry line between coincidence and prophecy may be what keeps this manga so captivating.
A Dream of Mount Fuji's Eruption
Among the dreams is one depicting Mount Fuji erupting.
No specific date is given, and the scene is more of a hazy vision than a clear prediction,
leaving interpretation entirely up to the reader.
It's not a warning—it's a record.
And it’s that ambiguity that gives it a chilling realism.
We can only hope nothing comes of it.
A New Fear: July 2025
For years, the original edition was out of print, and after the earthquake, second-hand prices soared past ¥100,000.
It became a collector’s item—"the phantom book."
Then in 2021, Ryo Tatsuki returned from retirement, and a new edition was released by Asuka Shinsha:
The Future I Saw: Complete Edition.
It included new dreams and reflections after the 2011 disaster.
But now, attention is shifting toward one particular entry:
A dream that described a major disaster in July 2025.
Tatsuki maintains this was just a dream, not a prophecy.
Still, social media is once again stirring with curiosity—and concern.
Popular Japanese YouTuber "Naokiman" also discusses this July 2025 prophecy (English subtitles available):
RAW JAPAN’s Takeaway
"A dream is just a dream."
That may be what most people believe—but this manga might just make you think twice.
Whether you believe it or not is up to you.
But if you happen to dream something strange tonight…
You might just remember it years from now, in a very different world.
As for me—I once had a terrifying dream where a horde of zombies came spilling out of a trash can…
and silently started polishing my shoes.
Was that some kind of prophecy too…?
